Hymns from the Liturgy and Matins of Holy Thursday

Liturgy:

(Tone 6)

Truly Judas is descended form those vipers who ate manna in the wilderness yet murmured against Him who nourished them.  For while the food was still in their mouths, those ungrateful men reviled God. So too this godless man, while still bearing in his mouth the heavenly bread, contrived the betrayal of the Savior. What greedy purpose! What inhuman insolence! HE sells Him who nourished him. He delivers to death the Master whom he loved. Truly this lawless man is their son. With them will he inherit perdition. Spare our souls of such inhumanity, O only Lord of boundless mercy.

Instead of the Cherubic Hymn:

Of Thy mystical supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a communicant. For I will not speak of Thy mystery of Thine enemies, neither like Judas will I give Thee a kiss, but like the thief will I confess Thee. Remember me, O Lord, in Thy Kingdom! Alleluia! (3)

Instead of All of creation rejoices…, we sing (Tone 6)

Come, O faithful, let us enjoy the Master’s hospitality: the banquet of immortality. In the upper chamber with uplifted minds, let us receive the exalted words of the Word, whom we magnify.

Matins:

Antiphon XV: (Tone 6)

Today He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung upon the tree. He who is king of the angels is arrayed in a crown of thorns. He who wraps the heavens in clouds is wrapped in the purple of mockery. He who freed Adam in the Jordan is slapped on the face. The Bridegroom of the church is affixed to the cross with nails. The Son of the virgin is pierced by a spear. We worship Thy passion, O Christ. We worship Thy passion, O Christ. We worship Thy passion, O Christ. Show us also Thy glorious resurrection.

(A recording of this Antiphon can be found here. Here is a byzantine form of the same hymn)

The Cannon (Tone 6):

Ode 5

Irmos: Early will I seek Thee, O Word of God, who without change didst empty Thyself in Thy compassion for fallen man, who without suffering didst bow down to suffering. Grant peace to me, O Thou who lovest mankind.

Refrain: Glory to Thee, O God, glory to Thee! (2x)

Refrain: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

Refrain: Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen

Ode 8

Irmos: The godly youths exposed a monument of godless wickedness, but the lawless assembly is enraged and takes vain counsel against Christ. They plan to kill Him who holds life in the palm of His hand, Whom all creation blesses and glorifies throughout all ages.

Refrain: Glory to Thee, O God, glory to Thee! (2x)

Refrain: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

Refrain: Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen

Ode 9

Irmos: More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious without compare than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word; verily Theotokos we magnify Thee!

Exposilarion (The Wise Thief):

The wise thief didst thou make worthy of paradise in a single moment, O Lord: by the wood of Thy Cross, illumine me as well, and save me.

Glory…

The wise thief…

Now and ever…

The wise thief…

Praises

Praise Him with sounding cymbals, praise Him with cymbals of jubilation! Let every breath praise the Lord!

(Tone 3)

Every member of Thy flesh endured dishonor for us. Thy head the thorns, Thy face the spitting, They cheeks the buffeting, Thy mouth the taste of vinegar mingled with gall. Thy ears the impious blasphemies, Thy back the scourge, Thy hand the reed, Thy whole body extended upon the Cross. Thy joints the nails, Thy side the spear. By Thy sufferings Thous hast set us free suffering. In Thy love for man Thou didst stoop down to raise us up. O Almighty Savior, have mercy on us.

Glory…

They have stripped me of my garments and clothed me in a scarlet robe. They have set upon my head a crown of thorns and have given me a reed in my right hand. That I might dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

Now and ever…

(Tone 6)

I gave my back to scourgings, I did not turn away my face from spittings, I stood before the judgement seat of Pilate. And endured the Cross, For the salvation of the world.
